Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
I've come to realise - after years of disappointment - that the Academy is just another possible source of player transfers, not some automatic conveyor belt to feed the first team squad.

There are Premier teams, lower league teams, foreign teams and the Academy. If we need a player, we will look in all of those places for the best option. There are pros and cons to all of them.

The Academy should be a lower cost option, perhaps it is even our "preferred supplier", and yes there is an element of being able to influence the development of the players to fit our requirements, but if we need a particular player in a particular position and the right option doesn't happen to be available within the Academy at the right time we have to try and get one from somewhere else. If the right time never comes, we let them leave, hopefully for a fee to recoup some or all of the cost of development. It's probably profitable.

Promotion from the Academy has become less frequent under Moyes because as we know he doesn't like signing players just to make up the numbers, which is a shame for our home grown talent.

No idea what happened with Sonny. But I suspect if Moyes had really wanted him he would have made it happen. Perhaps he was just one of several ok options and he wasn't that bothered either way.

I mentioned him earlier in the thread, but the one I thought was going to bite us on the arse for selling too early was Danny Williamson.....sadly he got a career ending injury.....

No. But then I don't see anyone at any level beating down the door to work for KGBS. Whilst all of us have the incurable West Ham disease the owners and potential employees usually (Noble aside) do not.

In recent times that is, having just thought of Defoe.

Same with Incoming. Can you think of anyone who we have taken from another academy into our own, or anyone into our U18s or U23s as a "prospect" and that has seen significant first team action?

Declan of course, but was released and given to us rather than poached or left against the other teams will like Perkins has.

Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
I can't actually think of anyone who left the academy directly and made the highest grade since Ray Houghton. Yes, a few have come through the ranks and been sold but directly leaving the academy, I am stretched. To be honest I have not been convinced by Perkins. That said there is a rigidity in the payment structure which needs to be reviewed. Obviously the youngsters should not have money thrown at them. But rewards based, performance based, progression based has to be more encouraging than it is now. The clue is in the title "Professional". I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Declan Rice situation has some roots in the fact that despite performing at a high level in the first team it took senior players (Zabaleta) to remonstrate with the board to get his salary to even a base first team level.
To move to the next level there has to be incentives to stay and grow. That may well mean that the academy itself needs an upgrade from a nissen hut in the corner of a school field to a proper state of the art facility.
It also requires the employers to be "employers of choice" by the way they conduct themselves, showing ambition. Not likely in the GSB era, sadly.

Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
West Ham, like many PL clubs, make significant investments in their youth squads. But lets be clear, all the risk is on the club, none on the kid players or their families. However much 'promise' is shown by the kid, there are no guarantees they will ever make the final grade at PL level - and few actually do. Some you win, most your lose. At the end of the day no youth player is worth the risk of breaking the club's pay structure over.

Perkins is shit and is never going to make it at Prem level, so who cares?

Perkins was dipped in and out a few times last season and never looked good enough.

Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
Part of him leaving must of been down to Moyes..... last season the manager showed no matter how well you are doing in the youth teams you wont get a chance when it seems you are needed.

Young players nowadays would rather move elsewhere and get first team football than play in the PL2. With Moyes in charge, I dont blame our youngsters for wanting to try get first team football elsewhere, our youngsters came 2nd in the PL2 last season and dont think one of them made a prem appearance? maybe Chesters had a cameo one game? .....

Its a big issue, some of them certainly look worthy of more minutes than they got.......bringing through 3 or 4 of them could help us massivly with our squad issues and allow us to spend more money on better players elsewhere

Anton, Defoe and the one that was a better footballer than Frank Jnr and used to get subbed Danny Williamson…..need a mention on product of our youth system….

Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
Him and his family are massive Spurs fans. Zero commitment/ emotional attachment to West Ham, so going after the best deal he can. Probably under bad advice, but lets be honest - could easily get a career ending injury tomorrow, so getting the best deal you can is understandable.

Also don't blame West Ham - don't know what he was asking for, but I'm guessing it was above market for a kid of his experience.

I would rather they just pulled their finger out buying a LB, CM and a CF

Re: Sonny Perkins leaves West Ham
If true that him and agent wanted big money then you can't blame the club for not offering it. He's yet to do anything in the first team. He may develop into a good player but only then should he be rewarded.

His contract should have been changed last summer, include a years extension that way we don't lose out had he improved as hoped for.

Not sure if that was discussed back then of course, but its still annoying we lose any players (not just youths) when they end up out of contract. I'm aware the high wages we pay initially bites us in the foot often.

Players have to earn their contracts and young players who achieved nothing should be patient
Understood that Declan Rice when he broke in as a regular starter was on £3k a week.
Perkins is promising but to my view at 18 needs another couple of years of physical development before he'd be ready (if at all) for first team football.
Maybe he will turn into the new Harry Kane but looks like he is being poorly advised for me.
I see Ashby and Longelo were added to the squad to train in Scotland and expect he would have joined them if he was staying.
